20 new areas for offshore wind identified

A group led by the Norwegian Directorate of Water Resources and Energy (NVE) has identified 20 new areas that are technically suitable for offshore wind, and where conflicts with other interests are relatively low. The areas correspond to 30 GW of offshore wind by 2040, almost doubling Norwegian power production.

All the identified areas must go through a strategic impact assessment, before opening and announcement. In addition to the maps with the 20 areas and professional descriptions, a proposal for an assessment program has been drawn up and will be sent for consultation. This sets the framework for further assessments, which will provide a better knowledge base and facilitate the selection of the areas most suitable for the development of offshore wind. These processes are followed up by the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy.

The 20 areas are presented in more detail on NVE's website (Norwegian only).
